Should government take care of peoples health?

Aparna Anand

Without any qualms one can say that healthy citizens make a country rich and prosperous. In the present scenario, amidst of all sophisticated devices the cost of health care climbs up. It is a cumbersome task for government authorities to tally the budget for health care. This points out to two possible solutions that either the people should take the overall responsibility of their own health by having private health insurance policies, or there should be a common welfare system which promotes free health services for each and every citizen.

The former view may be clearly related to the fact that if citizens of a country are taking care of their own health hazards the country can maintain a strong financial stability, which in turn helps the individuals to have an overall well-being. To make it more clearer, The economic breakdown occurs in every country when the public health ministry takes care of each and every ailment of its countrymen. On the contrary, The huge burden in the shoulder of our government authorities can be mitigated, if people themselves pays for their illness with the help of private insurances like LIC. Also, manifold public departments are working in loss due to lack of funds.

The latter view may be based on the fact that it is the ultimate responsibility of the government to safeguard the health and safety of its people. The people belong to various age group with manifold physical ailments causes a huge burden for the bread winner, if government have a comprehensive health care system which undertakes the responsibility of all health care costs, that shields the insuperable financial problems of the family. For instance, For a cancer patient the main treatment strategy is chemotherapy it is done by 8-10 steps for each step nearly 1 lakh rupees is required in India. A normal family cannot afford such a large amount for treatment. Hence, in such situations it is huge relief that the public system undertakes the burden of health care.

However, I strongly believe that it is better to give financial help to families considering their financial status. The rich and affluent can take care of themselves but for poor people who meets the expenses by daily income can never afford the cost of health care thus it is better to make a scheme for health care depends on the annual income not based on caste or creed.

Hence, I think it is better for the government to take care of the people who deserves government attention, whilst the elite class can take care of their own health needs. This will sustain the socio- economic balance of a country.
